Internal Management Memoranda
![]()
EFFECTIVE DATE: December 1, 2005
INTERNAL MANAGEMENT MEMORANDUM NUMBER: 6C1-6.150-3
SUBJECT: UF/IFAS; Computer Security, Support, and Operating Environment
1) Purpose
The purpose of this memorandum is to outline the policy and procedures for security, support, and operating environment for UF/IFAS computer workstations and servers.
2) Policy and Procedures
a) Security
In order to maintain compliance with UF Information Technology Security Policy and UF Acceptable Use Policy, IFAS Office of Information Technology (IT) has the right to perform centrally based installations of anti-virus, security patching, and other approved management software onto IFAS computers. The purpose of these installations is to secure user data and close security vulnerabilities. These installations will be limited to software security related issues. Units, groups, or individuals may make a written request for exemption from these implementations. Such requests should be made to the VP via the IT Director and should include a written justification. Sufficient audit control must be provided to ensure that the exempted computers are being properly managed by other means.
b) Support and Operating System
The Office of Information Technology is only equipped to provide full support for computers using a current Microsoft™ Windows operating system. IFAS faculty and staff are strongly discouraged from purchasing computers using alternate operating systems for compatibility reasons, and do so with the understanding that they are personally responsible for network access and interoperability.
c) Network Access
All IFAS-managed computers and network user accounts will be configured as members of the University of Florida Active Directory (UFAD). Organizational Unit (OU) design will be implemented as approved by the IFAS Computer Coordinators (ICC). Computers in stand-alone applications with no connection to the UF/IFAS computer network are exempt from this requirement.
