SUBJECT: UF/IFAS; Faculty Special Assignment Procedure

  1. General

    Faculty may be asked to serve on special assignments by external agencies. Examples include assignments with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Agency for International Development, or other federal, state or local agencies, non-governmental organizations, or foreign governments. Such assignments may be approved if there is a clear and significant benefit to IFAS and the University.

  2. Approval Procedure

    The faculty member should send a request for special assignment to the Vice President, endorsed by their unit leader, with approvals from the appropriate Deans. The request should include:

    1. Description, request, conditions and remuneration for the assignment.
    2. Time period of the assignment.
    3. Statement of how IFAS duties will be covered.
    4. If salary savings will be generated, IMM 6C1-6.20-5 should be followed.

  3. Criteria for Approval

    1. Assignment must show a clear and significant benefit to IFAS and the University.
    2. Assignment will benefit the faculty member's career or professional development.
    3. IFAS duties are adequately covered during the absence of the faculty member.
    4. Absence of potential conflict of interest with assignment.
