Internal Management Memoranda
EFFECTIVE DATE: December 1, 1993
INTERNAL MANAGEMENT MEMORANDUM NUMBER: 6C1-6.40-19 (Revised)
SUBJECT: IFAS; Policy for Disposal of Live Animals, Carcasses, Meat
Products, and Feed
The following is the IFAS policy with regard to animals,
carcasses, meat products, and feed, and should be strictly enforced
by all units.
- Live Animal Disposal
- State Owned Animals -- Live animals should be sold
either at auction or by bid process. Animals can be
sold through slaughter facilities if this procedure is
necessary to obtain carcass data. Live animals owned
by UF are not to be sold by private treaty.
- Foundation Owned Animals -- Live SHARE animals owned
by the University of Florida Foundation, Inc. (UFF)
may be sold at auction, by bid process or by private
treaty, if the selling price through private treaty is
at or above local market value. SHARE animals may
also be sold through slaughter facilities if procedure
is necessary to obtain carcass data.
- Live animals, whether UF or UFF owned, are not to be
traded for goods or services, given at no charge to
any employee of the University, or donated to any
individual or organization. Employees at IFAS farm
units do not have the option of taking "worthless" or
"unwanted" animals home. Such animals must be
sacrificed by approved humane methods or moved through
the appropriate sales channels as outlined above.
- Individuals, including University employees, and
organizations may purchase IFAS state owned animals
through public auction.
- Animal Carcasses and Meat Products -- Disposal of carcasses
and meat products is subject to the same policy as with
live animals. All such carcasses and products, if edible,
will be processed and sold through the established meat
laboratory facility within the Department of Animal
Science. If the carcass is inedible, the carcass or
carcass parts will be disposed of by the appropriate
method.
- Feed Disposal -- No feed whether owned by UFF (SHARE) or
the State of Florida is to be sold by private treaty,
traded for goods or services, given at no charge to any
employee of the University, or donated to any individual or
organization. Waste feed, mill floor sweepings, and other
similar feed with limited value should be fed to
appropriate animals at the animal unit or disposed of in
accordance with applicable rules.
